A network proxy is a gateway that acts as an intermediary between a local network (such as all devices within a building or company) and the internet. It adds an additional layer of security, privacy and performance improvement on a device when connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
To configure a proxy in Windows 10 you can either use the settings app, or manually modify your configuration. If you are using the settings app, select Network & Internet and select Proxy. You can skip this step if the Use a Proxy Server option is already turned off. In other cases, turn the switch on and then fill in your proxy server address and port details.
You may be requested by an IT administrator to use the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol script (WPAD) in the event that you’re using a proxy at work or in a school environment. This method is more reliable that a manual configuration.
It is also recommended to disable any third-party software that might interfere with or alter your network settings. This includes firewalls, antivirus, and VPN applications. This is especially useful in the event of an error message saying “Windows cannot recognize this network’s Proxy settings automatically.”
If all else fails it is possible to perform a system reset. This will remove any programs and drivers that were installed prior to the restore point was established, allowing you to restore your system’s default settings. This should solve the issue which will allow you to connect to the internet without getting the error message.
